      Surprisingly we don’t know.

      When you observe the universe, gravity seems to indicate a certain mass. Lets pick 100 as a nice number. Everything we know of, stars, planets, dust, comets, etc. accounts for very little of that gravity. Say 30 of the 100 (30%). 70% is called Dark Matter. We have no idea what is causing 70% of the gravity in the universe!
