It has to be figuring things out and finding questions out to questions I have. How do bacteria sense metals? How does this affect how harmful they can be? How do they get the ones they need? It’s the most interesting thing to me because I have to work them out! Some people have the answers and I can read them online but then I come up with more questions and I have to make experiments and figure out what they’re showing me and why. That freedom to make those decisions and direct myself is what I find most interesting in my project.

I think it is not knowing what the day will hold. When you are researching into new topics you do not know what you will find, so this is fascinating. What results did you get? What do these mean? How does this change your thinking about things?

Learning new things all the time! Recently I went to Spain to learn a new sort of maths. Before I started my current job, I didn’t know much about bacteria or antibiotics, so I had to spend a few weeks reading. Today I am learning how to use a new bit of computer software.
