I have plenty of time to do the hobbies and sports that I love. It’s all about being able to manage your time effectively and being realistic about what you can and can’t do. That’s pretty much the key to maintaining your academic and recreational activities. Sports are harder to try to keep up though, when your hobby is reading you just pick up a book, but a training session or match can’t be picked up and put down whenever you have time!

My full time student days are now gone, but still find time management an issue. My solution is love your work then it can also be your hobby! Despite this, I do still find time to go to the gym and do other things I like, but being a scientist is not a 9 to 5 job.

Well, as an undergraduate doing your first degree, most people have a lot of time for hobbies. I was in all sorts of groups for everything from getting the University to go Fairtrade to doing an Ironman Triathlon. University is a good time to take up new hobbies, because there are lots of people who also want to try new things.

It’s complicated for me, because the medicine that I take means I need to sleep a lot and get tired quickly. So I work part-time in my main job, and then do some other work when I am having a good week. I also need to make sure I keep fit, so I run a lot – I was supposed to be doing a marathon a few weeks ago, but I got flu so I couldn’t. And because I work from home most of the time, I need to get out of the house and talk to people – so I go to church, and have several other hobbies like dancing and Live Action Role Playing, where I pretend to be an elf for a few weekends a year! Here’s a photo, though not of me:

When I went to the University of Bath to do my first degree at undergraduate level, I did a lot of kickboxing and basketball. There was plenty of time between work and lectures. I was also an active member of the Christian Union.

Now I’m at the University of Nottingham studying for a doctorate, I still play a lot of basketball on the weekends and I help running a local church as a church warden. I also like watching strange films at a local cinema.

As you grow older and gain more responsibility, you generally do have to plan your time better to maintain rest time as well as the things you like doing as well as your work and other responsibilities. This may mean there is not enough time for everything you want to do, but there is still time to have fun!

As a graduate student I play football three, sometimes four times a week. If you have good time management, there is no reason why students (undergraduate or graduate) can’t keep hobbies going as well as academic work.
