Hi, a great question! This can be challenging and there are a few methods. Frequent combing with a nit comb can work but you need to time this correctly. There are also several products commercially available (some work better than others). There is also a lot of methods that commercial companies try to promote, but these are not always well tested. Actually I am trying to do some research on them, so would gladly receive any offerings of either head lice or nits in a safely packed way (snap shut plastic bag).
It is difficult! My Mum was a school nurse, so I asked her, and she said the best way was to get a lot of conditioner, cover your hair in it (this suffocates the nits) then brush your hair very carefully with a nit comb, on several days – more instructions here: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Head-lice/Pages/Treatment.aspx
Wait until they are not looking, then run away really fast!
There are chemicals and shampoos that you can use that may or may not work. Generally, try not to catch them in the first place, nits don’t like clean hair with conditioner and don’t go near people with nits!
