Yes! The first thing I studied at university was Psychology. I liked the experiments and statistics, and learning about the brain. Then I wasn’t well enough to work for several years. When I was well enough, I decided that I should do more training so I was up-to-date, so I did a Masters degree in Public Health. Public Health is super interesting, because I studied everything from the very small like bacteria, to the very big like government policy.
Now my job is in antibiotic resistance, which is new to me – before I started work, I had to spend a few weeks reading about antibiotics and how the immune system works. But I have lots of useful skills from my previous study, in things like statistics and understanding healthcare systems and society, which help me in this job.
Well I kind of did to be honest! I changed from studying microbial communities and how they affect our health to how bacteria maintain metals in their cells. However I would NEVER change out of Biology! I love it too much! 😛
Occasionally. I work in chemical biology, but the chemistry takes a long time and involves alot of drudgery to get the compound you want/need. I’d prefer to do less chemistry and more biology but there isn’t really a field that does this as chemistry takes a long time in every field!
